Two Certified Primary Stroke Centers

Lehigh Valley Hospital—Muhlenberg is the second hospital in the Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network to be certified as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission.

The hospital, located in Bethlehem, Pa., joins Lehigh Valley Hospital at Cedar Crest and I-78 in Allentown, Pa., as a certified Primary Stroke Center. Lehigh Valley Hospital was the first hospital in the Lehigh Valley to be certified as a Primary Stroke Center in March 2004, and it was recertified in 2006.

“We’re proud of our achievements,” says John Castaldo, M.D., chief of neurology for Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network and medical director of both Stroke Centers. “They reaffirm our commitment to providing outstanding care to our patients and community in both Allentown and Bethlehem. It recognizes the ability of both centers to give fast, effective treatment that improves stroke patients’ chances of recovery.”

The Stroke Centers at Lehigh Valley Hospital—Cedar Crest and Lehigh Valley Hospital—Muhlenberg both feature a Stroke Rapid Response Team that has full-time physician coverage and are supported by a care team that includes emergency services, neurology, radiology and nursing. Stroke centers have dedicated resources that can treat stroke patients with the clotbuster tPA any time of day or night. Nine percent of patients arriving at Lehigh Valley Hospital receive tPA, compared to 3 percent nationwide. The Stroke Center at Lehigh Valley Hospital participates in multicenter clinical research studies on promising new therapies for stroke patients.

To earn Primary Stroke Center certification, a hospital must demonstrate compliance with the Brain Attack Coalition’s recommendations, including:
  • Compliance with consensus-based national standards.
  • Effective use of clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care.
  • An organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.
